LEXINGTON, KY -- On a slow drive on the winding road through Cove Haven Cemetery, you can see how the final resting place of the deceased can come back to life.

"The birds are back," said Ruthan Fields, the cemetery's volunteer operations manager since 1997. "When I first came out here, the birds didn't come over to chirp. Now, the birds are back and chirping."

Indeed, Cove Haven, celebrating 100 years since its first burial, has been rejuvenated in the last decade, rising from years of neglect and a lack of money into a well-maintained site of a great deal of Lexington's 20th-century black history. MORE
